But there’s a catch. If you don’t get the electrical specs exactly right, you’re just throwing money away because that tube will burn out in a week.
Getting the Specs Right
Here is the thing about those circular quartz tubes. They use a halogen-filled chamber to keep the heat steady, and they are picky. **Check your voltage and wattage first.**Always. I can’t tell you how many times we’ve seen someone plug a 230V tube into a 400V circuit because they didn’t glance at the nameplate. It doesn’t just “not work”—it fails immediately. Boom. Then there’s the physical fit. It has to be spot on. If the tube is too short, you’ll end up with annoying cold spots in your oven. If it’s too long? It’ll press against the housing. As the glass heats up and expands, it’ll just crack.
Materials and the “Little Things”
We stick with high-purity quartz because it can actually handle the heat without warping. Some of these tubes have a special coating on them. It’s not just for show—it shifts the infrared wavelength. This is a big deal because it helps the heat soak deep into the dough instead of just scorching the outside of the crust. And keep an eye on the connectors (usually R7s or SK15).
