
Why We Put Our Heaters Through “The Sauna from Hell”
If you’re putting an infrared heater in a bathroom or out in the garden, you’re basically asking that piece of hardware to fight a war against moisture every single day. Now, you’ll see “IP65” on the box. That’s great. It means the unit can handle dust and a few splashes of water. But here’s the thing: an IP rating tells you how it works the moment it leaves the factory. It doesn’t tell you if the seals are still doing their job after three years of steam, rain, and crazy temperature swings.
The hidden battle with humidity
We don’t just hope for the best. We put every batch of lamps through damp-heat aging tests. Why? Because humidity is sneaky. It doesn’t just cause a bit of rust. When these heaters get hot, moisture finds those tiny, microscopic gaps in the housing. Then, as the heater cools down, it creates a vacuum effect—basically sucking more damp air inside. Over time, that moisture eats away at the electrical contacts and ruins the gaskets. If that happens, you aren’t just looking at a flicker. You’re looking at a short circuit or a dead heating element.
Breaking things on purpose
Our aging chambers are essentially high-tech torture devices. We crank the humidity up to 95% and cycle the heat over and over. We aren’t interested in whether the lamp works on day one. Any cheap heater can do that. We want to know where it breaks on day 1,000. We look for those tiny “leakage” paths where moisture might bridge the gap between live parts. It’s better that we find the breaking point now than you finding it in your bathroom three years from now.
The balancing act
Here is the tricky part: tight seals are a double-edged sword. If we make the seal too tight to keep every drop of water out, we accidentally trap all the heat inside the chassis. The internal components basically cook themselves in their own juices. So, we spend a lot of time tweaking the gasket compression. We want it watertight, but we also need the internals to breathe enough so the wiring doesn’t get brittle and crack from the heat soak. It’s a fine line to walk. But it’s the only way to give you a heater that stays dry and actually lasts.
