
Keeping Your Bathroom Infrared Heaters Safe and Dry
Putting a heater in a bathroom is a bit of a gamble. You’ve got steam everywhere and water splashing just about every surface. If you’re installing infrared lamps, you can’t just slap on a plastic cover and call it a day. That’s a recipe for disaster. To actually keep things safe, you need an IP55-rated setup and a wiring plan that doesn’t leave room for error.
Dealing with the Steam
When you see “IP55,” just think of it as a shield. It keeps dust out and stops water jets from sneaking in, regardless of where they’re coming from. We handle this by using silicone gaskets to seal the junction box and cable glands that squeeze tight around the power lead. It’s all about the seal. If that seal lets go, moisture hits the terminals. That’s when you get “tracking”—basically, electricity starts leaking across the insulator—and before you know it, you’ve got a short circuit.
How to Actually Isolate the Power
We don’t take chances here. We use double-insulated wiring and reinforced ceramic holders to make sure the live current stays far away from the metal chassis. The lamp itself is a quartz tube, but the real danger zone is where the lamp pins meet the power supply. To fix that, we use heat-resistant, moisture-proof potting compounds to basically “shrink-wrap” those joints in a solid block. Water simply can’t get to the conductive parts. And for heaven’s sake,ground the metal housing. If something does go wrong, a grounded chassis means your breaker trips instantly. Without it, the entire outer shell could become live. You really don’t want to find that out the hard way.
The Catch: Heat vs. Water
Here’s the thing: the tighter you seal a box to keep water out, the harder it is for heat to escape. If you cram a high-wattage lamp into a tiny IP55 box without any way for the electronics to breathe, you’re basically slow-cooking your own wiring. It’ll degrade and fail way sooner than it should. You have to find that sweet spot. Balance the waterproof seal with enough surface area to let the terminals cool down. If your housing is small, don’t push the wattage too high. It’s better to have a heater that fits the box than one that melts its own insulation.
