
Making Bathroom Heaters That Actually Last
Putting an infrared heater in a shower area is a bit of a gamble if you aren’t careful. You’ve got two big enemies: thermal shock and electrical leaks. Think about it. You have a quartz tube burning at 600°C, and then a single, cold drop of water hits it. Most standard tubes just can’t handle that kind of sudden temperature swing. They contract too fast and—pop—the glass shatters. That’s why we lean on explosion-proof quartz.
Why the glass doesn’t shatter
It isn’t some magic trick. It’s all about how the material is tempered and coated. We use a high-purity synthetic quartz that’s built to handle those wild temperature jumps. By adding a protective layer or thickening the tube walls, the lamp can take a hit from a stray water droplet and keep right on glowing. Inside, there’s a tungsten filament. We set these up for short-wave infrared radiation. The cool thing here is that it doesn’t waste time heating up the air in the room; it goes straight for your skin. You feel the warmth the second you flip the switch. In a cold bathroom, that’s the only thing that matters.
Keeping the water out
You’ll see “IPX4” or other waterproof ratings on the box, but that’s only half the story. The real danger zone is where the quartz tube meets the electrical terminals. If steam sneaks into the wiring, you’re looking at short circuits or dangerous arcs. To stop that, we use high-temperature silicone seals and alloys that don’t rust. It keeps the moisture where it belongs—on the floor, not in your electronics.
The balancing act: Heat vs. Lifespan
Here’s the trade-off. Everyone wants that “instant blast” of heat, which means pushing more wattage through the tube. But more power means more stress on the quartz. If you push too much current through a tube that’s too thin, you’re basically inviting the filament to burn out. It might feel great for a month, but it won’t last the winter. We find the sweet spot by balancing the wattage with the length of the tube. It gives you the warmth you want without the headache of replacing the unit every single season.
